After over 20 years in the IT industry, I decided it was time to shift gears and return to one of my greatest passions: RVing. My love for the open road began in childhood, visiting my grandparents during their winters in Tucson, first in an Airstream and later in the legendary Cortez motorhome. Inspired by my grandfather’s obsession with Alaska Highways Magazine, they once drove from Indiana to Seattle and ferried their RV all the way to Alaska. I didn’t get to go (my older sister did — yes, I’ve forgiven her… mostly), but that adventure left a lasting mark on me.
Then came 1976: the Bicentennial road trip. My parents packed me, my three sisters, and our soft-coated Wheaten Terrier, Taffy, into the Cortez — with a second trailer in tow — and off we went through Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and toward Oregon. Spoiler alert: we never made it. Yellowstone was the turning point, where my mom, denied her morning toothbrushing time by four girls arguing over makeup in the one and only RV bathroom, was found banging her head on the vehicle. We took hotels on the way home after that. And Taffy? She left a little “gift” in the driver’s seat each morning in protest.
RVing has come a long way since then.
